A New Destination on the Cultural Map
Designed and created especially for the Bucharest subway, M City is an ambitious project dedicated to visual arts, initiated and produced by VAR Cultural Association in partnership with METROREX.
The project was born from the desire of the organizers to exploit the underground urban spaces, by facilitating the dialogue between artists and the travelling public in transit. M City offers a new perspective on the usual itinerary, making room for a cultural micro-universe that we don’t have time to explore properly on the surface, because we are more often preoccupied with our everyday worries.
By providing the spaces it owns, METROREX rallied to the idea of supporting the artistic life of the capital. Thanks to this collaboration, the exhibitions (permanent or temporary) will bring the practices of Romanian visual artists into the daily life of the travelling public.
“We want the subway network to become an integral part of the city’s artistic life, a cultural space that people can enter not just out of necessity. We are convinced that, with the beginning and development of the project, we will not only talk about a continuously movement from point A to point B, but about many reasons to hang around in the intimate space of each artist present in M City, even if is for a short time. It is not a project that invites artists to decorate the subway stations, but it is meant to promote the contemporary art movement and the view of each exhibiting artist on the present we are all part of.” – Andu Dumitrescu, visual artist/co-founder of VAR Cultural Association.
Starting from November 19th, 2021, in IZVOR subway station, the first group exhibition within the project will be available to visit.
